Why use environmental assessments/lifecycle assessments?

The introduction of new technologies, products or materials is often accompanied by a promise of environmental improvements. At the same time, the fear of an undesirable impact on the environment or people arises, primarily because the technology, product or material introduces new aspects that have not been thoroughly examined.

This lack of knowledge often results in a so-called “fear of technology” and may unnecessarily diminish or delay the effectiveness of a new product on the market.

By creating a balanced overview of the environmental advantages and disadvantages (environmental assessment) of a certain technology, product or material, the company can gain easier access to the market and even increase its market share.

Formerly, companies focused largely on minimising the environmental impact internally, but today the focus is not only limited to the company but includes the entire product lifecycle – from the manufacture of raw materials to the disposal of the product.

We are seeing more and more companies lose image and customers when, for example, one of their subcontractors in the East discharges chemicals or contaminated sewage into a river in which their children swim.

The best way to avoid losing customers or to maintain a company’s positive image is to be on the cutting edge and produce environmentally-friendly products. At the same time, the company may gain a competitive advantage.

Environmental assessments can also serve as inspiration as to which focus areas may improve a product’s environmental profile or as documentation of the product’s environmental advantages in comparison with competing products.
